Château Revelette

In his early years at Château Revelette, Peter Fischer won a fair few awards for his very modern wines. But he has not kept living in the past.

It’s now been twenty-five years since Peter has chosen a song to sing other than for competition. Speaking with many of his peers, countless tastings, and reflecting on his own methods – which you imagine are relentlessly logical – have helped him understand that he needs not make easily understood wines in order to earn praise for Provence or himself.

It is not conquering the world, “it’s only the giving that makes you what you are”, as Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull’s mercurial flautist and leader, points out.

Peter Fischer thus gives everything to his wild terroir in the Coteaux d’Aix, hidden amid thousands of acres of woodland and splendid views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. These vineyards, cultivated organically with the utmost respect, provide the roots and branches of his Revelette wines. Whether they are Grand, true, or even PUR (Produits Uniquement de Raisins), the wines’ bond with the terroir that yields them is so close that their character speaks in the glass: the rugged continental climate; the acidity, tautness and cool
altitude of Sainte-Victoire’s northern flank; the aromatic complexity – flowers and spice – of the abundant Provençal countryside around Aix; ripeness fostered by southern sunshine; and, of course, the specifics of each vintage… What makes Peter happy is that his wines can be placed geographically blind, with only smell and taste for guidance.

“The beauty of a terroir, in the true sense of the word, is offering a unique, recognisable product that can be kept over time.”
